Georgia's Biggest Non-Typical Bucks Of 2004

The 10-point frame grosses 169 5/8 and nets 164 3/8. Strictly from a scoring standpoint, it is best for a rack to have either no abnormal points or a great many. In this particular case, with three abnormal points, totaling 13 5/8 inches, the best decision is to add this figure to the net score, categorizing the rack as non-typical with a final score of 178 B&C. This ranks the buck as the second biggest non-typical of 2004, and for Lee County, it also stands as the No. 2 all time non-typical.

Davis Quick's Huge 18-Pointer
In late November, Davis Quick was positioned near a Brooks County food plot planted to oats and rye. Around mid morning, a doe walked into the plot, but instead of feeding, the deer acted very nervous, continually looking into the woods behind her.

Several minutes later, the hunter suddenly heard a buck grunting, and eventually got a glimpse of the deer moving through the pines in his direction. Under-story vegetation prevented a good view of the buck's antlers; however, there was no doubt that the buck carried a large rack. At his first clear shot opportunity, Davis dropped the big whitetail in its tracks.

The buck's rack has 18 points, including a somewhat unusual 7x5 typical frame. The main beams exceed 23 inches and tine length is exceptional, with five tines measuring between 9 3/8 and 11 3/8 inches.

The typical frame nets 155 2/8 B&C points, however, this score could easily have been much higher if the G-5 and G-6 tines on the right beam had been matched on the left. After adding in the six abnormal points, totaling 14 6/8 inches, the rack's final non-typical score is 170 B&C. Ranking No. 3 in the state for 2004, means that Brooks County produced two of the state's top three non-typicals last season.

John Lee's Double-Beam 12-Pointer
Situated in a flat of bottomland hardwoods near the Flint River in Taylor County, 13-year-old John Lee, of Fort Valley intently watched a small area of trees and undergrowth 80 yards away. Seconds earlier, he had detected the flicker of a deer's tail, and now, after focusing his attention on that location, he could see the outline of a buck with its head down feeding.

With his rifle in position, the young hunter continued to watch the buck as it slowly moved along. Finally, the deer stopped and raised its head. John did not need a second look at the massive antlers to make his decision. Quickly aiming, he squeezed the trigger.

John's age would preclude him from being labeled a veteran hunter. Nevertheless, he has been deer hunting since the age of 8, and two years ago took a 140-class, 10-pointer. It is fair to say the youngster has now significantly raised the bar in terms of trophies he has taken.

The buck's unique rack includes double beams of 19 5/8 and 18 5/8 inches on the right antler and paired G-2 tines that measure over a foot in length. That is the good news. Unfortunately, the right and left antlers of the rack are so totally different from each other, that scoring bears no resemblance to the actual size of the antlers.

The rack's final non-typical score of 148 5/8 B&C includes 32 2/8 inches of abnormal points. However, there were also 21 1/8 inches of asymmetry deductions, due primarily to a very unusual 5x3 typical frame. All things considered, the score is not really that bad and the buck is certainly one great trophy whitetail.
